Readers speak out in our second annual awards
by Rachel Foster and Amy Christian

What is it that choosy moms — and dads — really choose? We asked our readers and received hundreds of responses to our second annual awards contest. It took us a while to dig through the results. As with our inaugural awards, some of the results were surprising, others predictable.
But enough about that — we know you want to get right to the winners, so, without further ado, here they are.

Parents Pick for…
Best Local Attraction
Fort Discovery
1 Seventh Street
706-821-0200
nscdiscovery.org
The perfect place where kids can make like Einstein and have fun at the same time. With hands-on science demonstrations, activity day camps and the Discovery Theater, there is never a dull moment for family members of all ages. Besides, where else in Augusta can kids climb the Martian Towers and feast on freeze-dried astronaut ice cream?

Parents Pick for…
Best Live Entertainment for Kids
Best Place to Have a Party
Best Entertainment
Chuck E. Cheese’s
706-737-4557
Swallow whatever fear you may have when it comes to anthropomorphized animals that sing and dance, because for parents-in-the-know, this is a great place for kids to get their kicks and party hard. A ball pit, games and a life size band of critters are on hand to ensure that the thrills (or horrors, depending on how you look at it) keep coming.

Parents Pick for…
Best Special Event
Arts in the Heart of Augusta
Downtown Augusta
706-826-4702
It takes over downtown each September and attracts thousands. It offers food and entertainment from around the world, and arts and crafts worth spending a lot of your hard-earned money on. It also has enough children’s activities to keep the kids busy for the entire three days that the festival gates are open (well, almost) and costs practically nothing to attend, which is probably why Parent readers voted Arts in the Heart the best special event around.

The Family Y
Various locations around the CSRA
Thefamilyy.org
If you haven’t seen the water park at the Family Y on Wheeler Road, then take a peek over the fence one day (we’re pretty sure they won’t mind) and you’ll be amazed at the sheer size of the place, not to mention all the fun things to do there (we highly recommend the water slide). But there’s more to the Family Y, and it’s a place — judging by the categories in which it won anyway — that parents and kids love. And a word of caution: If you haven’t signed your kids up for their summer day camps, do it early. Many, especially the gymnastics camps, fill up weeks in advance.

Best Place for Indoor Fun
Jumpin’ Party Zone USA
4495 Columbia Road, Ste. 3, Martinez
706-228-1819
jumpinpartyzoneusa.com
Don’t forget to bring your socks (and that means you too, parents) to this Columbia County party place, where both kids and parents are encouraged to play on a giant slide, a maze, a sports inflatable and the ever-present “jumpy-thing” (for lack of a better word). Not only is Jumpin’ Party Zone a great place to spend a birthday, but, with Open Jumps during the week and monthly Parents’ Nights Out, it’s a great place to go whenever the kids need to work off a little restless energy.

Parents Pick for…
Best Family Weekend Getaway
Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The sound of little voices nagging, “Are we there yet?” is much more bearable when the drive to your family destination only takes three-and-a-half hours. If you get to kick back at a beachfront bar after the kids pass out from a day of surf and sun at said destination, then it’s even more bearable. Along with its many family-friendly hotels, amusement parks and other attractions, this is perhaps the reason why so many parents picked Myrtle Beach as a favored family getaway.

Best Consignment Shop
Kid to Kid

706-364-6408
evans.kidtokid.com
With merchandise literally spilling out onto the sidewalk, Kid to Kid is the place for Parent readers to go when they need gently-used equipment, toys, clothing and shoes. Kids will have a ball opening the “kids only” door, playing with the toys and watching videos in the enclosed children’s area, allowing parents to browse the store’s extensive collection. But don’t forget to bring your own items in — Kid to Kid pays cash for like-new items and gives you
20 percent more if you agree to take store credit instead of cash.

Parents Pick for…
Best Department Store
Dillards
Dillards.com
Parents named this as their top choice for an area department store, and after a brief survey of the generous selection of fashionable clothing, footwear and home décor, it’s no wonder why. Then again, maybe part of the allure is the large Godiva chocolates stand that greets all who enter. If you need an excuse to go to the mall, this is a pretty good one.

Who wants to spend a fortune on clothes that you’ll only wear a few months? At Motherhood Maternity, moms-to-be don’t have to. Not too shabby.

So after you’ve outfitted your own rooms, go a few doors down and get, perhaps, a bunk bed/homework desk combo with great bed linens to go with. Just don’t let you kids know that you’re headed to Toys R Us, or else a quick trip to get a videogame for your nephew will turn into a day-long trek to the promised land of toys from which you may never return. At least the kids will be happy, though.

America’s favorite store is also the place CSRA families count on to outfit their kids for school at a price that won’t break their budgets. At least that’s what Parent readers say, anyway. 516 North Belair Road, Evans
706-210-5160
brusters.com
You know the ice cream is good when you see a line of people waiting outside Bruster’s in December. Maybe it’s the aroma of the waffle cones being made that drives them there (because you can smell them anywhere in the general vicinity), or maybe it’s the hot apple dumplings a la mode. It could be the discount you get on a banana split if you bring your own banana, or the fact that children and pets eat free. But if you ask us, it’s definitely the cake batter ice cream. We’d eat it even if it was 40 below.

Metro Augusta Parent readers don’t easily trust their children to other people’s care, but there’s something about the reassuring face of Patti Fowler, minister of weekday education at First Baptist Church in Augusta, that lets parents know that their little one’s will be OK in her care. Patti leads a group of dedicated educators in helping preschoolers — 400 of them, as a matter of fact — take their first tentative steps toward “big school” and for her tireless work she was recently awarded a Golden Apple Award from WJBF. Best “No Kids Allowed” Place
Rhinehart’s
3051 Washington Road, Augusta
706-860-2337
305 North Belair Road, Evans,
706-868-6850
rhineharts.com
Rhinehart’s does, of course, actually allow children on their premises, but it seems that when Parent readers want a little alone-time without the little ones, they drop the munchkins off with a babysitter and head to this “beyond casual” restaurant (either location will do) for a beer (or two) and some great seafood. Sorry, kids. Maybe next time.

Best Date Restaurant
Calvert’s
475 Highland Ave., Surrey Center
706-738-4514
calvertsrestaurant.com
Whether it’s for a birthday or anniversary celebration, Calvert’s is the perfect date restaurant, according to Parent readers. And we couldn’t agree more. Craig and Bev Calvert have created a Surrey Center tradition going back nearly 30 years and offer fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere. Don’t forget to try their Sunset Dinner for 2 for $28.95 from 5-6:30 p.m. each evening — it’ll get you home just in time to tuck the kids in for bed.

Best Spa
Tuscany
706-210-5335
608 Ponder Place, Evans
tuscanyclassicspa.com
Imagine a place where you can be pampered with 11 different types of massage (including one designed especially for expectant moms), nine varieties of facials and a full-body immersion into a bath or fragrant herbs. Sounds pretty nice, eh? Parent readers have spoken, and according to them, Tuscany spa is the place to be pampered. If you’re looking to detox, get a pedicure or (gently) remove a few layers of aging skin, Tuscany has got you covered.

Best Weekend Getaway
Atlanta and Charleston (tie)
What sounds better: A metropolitan city or a historic town where visitors can tour cobbled streets by carriage or stroll by the sea? With each location less than three hours away from the CSRA, both are easy to get to and offer a variety of attractions for everyone. Can’t choose? It’s OK, Parent readers couldn’t either. Don’t worry, though — there’s plenty to see and do in both cities.

Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) is a national faith-based group for moms and children that meets twice a month at two local churches. Mothers who join MOPS look forward to fellowship with like-minded moms and planned activities at each meeting, all while their children are cared for nearby. That means everybody’s happy!
