There are many camps to choose from, and each offers an assortment of cool activities from art and drama to rock climbing and horseback riding. We’ve added a sampling of Florida camps this year and, as always, we feature more than 50 camps in Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina, as well as a number of special needs and specialty camps. The 2006 rates are listed, if available, as well as inside information on what’s cool at each camp. Many of the camps now offer online registration and virtual tours. Athens Y Camp for Boys

ACA-accredited Christian-based camp for boys ages 7-16. Has a 6:1 camper to staff ratio. Activities include league games (softball, soccer, water sports, mud hockey, apple knocker) and classes (archery, tennis, wrestling, golf, nature study, canoeing and kayaking). An adventure camp is available for boys 12-16 that features rock climbing, mountain biking and rafting. There is a leadership program for boys 15 and up.

ACA-accredited girls-only camp with lots of activity choices from whitewater rafting to drama to photography. There is a sampler program for girls 7-10 for one week and a counselor-in-training program for high-school girls.
What’s cool? Both English and Western horseback riding instruction and other cool activities like sign language, working on the camp newspaper and an environmental education program. There’s also VivaVoce Camp where campers spend activity periods singing in a chorus, working with the composer in residence and composing music.

Camp Blue Ridge

What’s cool? Has paintball, go carts, roller hockey and a ropes course, as well as field trips to White Water Park in Atlanta and climbing and bouldering exhibitions. Camp Juliette Low

ACA-accredited camp for girls age 7-17. (There is a counselor-in-training program for older girls.) Camp stresses self-reliance, confidence and team cooperation through activities like tennis, canoeing, sailing, swimming, diving, horseback riding, archery, outdoor living skills and ropes courses. The camps emphasize the outdoors and campers sleep in platform tents. Campers will chop wood, tie knots, build fires and take overnight hikes.

What’s cool? Over the course of camp, the usual schedule of activities is interspersed with such events as a Fourth of July celebration, Mountain Day celebration and a trip day. Each night concludes with an activity that could range from a cabin camp out to a game of “Mission Impossible”.

What’s cool? The camping experience includes a giant Slip N’ Slide. Camp Coleman’s Equestrian Center recently became one of only 24 riding academies in the U. S. to receive Certified Horsemanship Association’s (CHA) Site Accreditation.

What’s cool? The camp offers many specialty programs. Athletic girls can enjoy the Sports Nuts program while drama queens can enjoy the Lights, Camera, Action! or Hip-Hop Divas program. There’s even a program called Car Sense that teaches older girls how to change a tire or check a car’s fluid level.

There’s also the usual fare of pottery, drama, sports, video games and more.

What’s cool? The camp’s 11-acre lake offers lots of water recreational activities. This is the first program nationwide to be accredited by the Association of Experiential Education, which emphasizes adventure programming.

What’s cool? There’s a 10-day co-ed wilderness adventure program available that teaches a love for the outdoors. Camp includes a Timberlake Wilderness Adventure program that features more advanced outdoor fun for youth ages 10-17.

What’s cool? There’s a farm where kids learn animal care, gardening, meteorology and veterinary science. Campers also learn unusual skills like papermaking, copper-enameling, broom making, grinding, making wheel-churned ice cream and cornbread.

Keystone Camp
